Maria F. López-Schmid specializes in architecture, architectural theory, and architectural history. Maria worked as a Professor in the Faculty of Architecture at Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico conducting design and history courses including a History of Caribbean architecture course.  López-Schmid has worked professionally in historic preservation in the Midwest, Southeast, and Puerto Rico.  She has completed architectural history reconnaissance and intensive surveys, Section 106 projects, and successfully nominated buildings and properties to the National Register of Historic Places in Puerto Rico and in Iowa. Ms. López-Schmid has presented her work at PastForward National Trust for Historic Preservation Conference 2014 in Savannah GA, the State Historic Preservation Office in San Juan, PR, and at Goucher College in Towson, MD. More recently in 2021, she published an article in the Revista Patrimonio (Heritage Magazine) for the San Juan State Historic Preservation Office in Puerto Rico .
